Human Rights Policy

Since its founding in 1977, Seikukai (SOL inc.) has held courtesy (rei) and sincerity (makoto) at the centre of how it teaches budo. Above all we want the dojo to be a place where everyone who gathers there respects one another as a person, and it is on that basis that we set out this Human Rights Policy.

This policy was drawn up in agreement with the aims of the “My Human Rights Declaration” promoted by the Ministry of Justice of Japan.

1. Our basic approach

We respect the human rights and the diversity of everyone involved with the dojo, whatever their age, sex, nationality, disability, beliefs or background. Training in budo is not only about competing in strength. At the root of our teaching is the cultivation of a mind that honours the opponent and extends a hand to those in a weaker position.

2. Scope

This policy applies to our instructors, staff, members and guardians, and to everyone involved in our activities. Instructors and staff are to understand this policy and to put it into practice first, in their daily teaching and in how the dojo is run.

3. No discrimination, violence or harassment

In teaching and in administration we permit no discrimination, corporal punishment, violence or harassment of any kind, including bullying, abuse of authority and sexual harassment. Teaching is carried out in a way that respects the dignity and the safety of the person being taught.

4. Respect for diversity, and training together with people with disabilities

Members with disabilities train alongside everyone else at our dojo. We respect differences in character, physical capacity and pace of growth, and work to build an environment in which each person can develop their own potential with peace of mind.

5. The rights and safety of children

Many children attend our dojo. We respect the dignity and the rights of every child, protect children from violence and from inappropriate words and conduct, and continue to maintain a safe environment in which they can devote themselves to training without worry.

6. Raising concerns and remedy

Concerns about discrimination, harassment or similar matters may be raised with any of our instructors or with the dojo office. We listen to them in earnest and take the action required. No one who raises a concern will be treated unfavourably for having done so.

7. A continuing commitment

In the spirit of budo, which begins with a bow and ends with a bow, we declare that we will respect human rights and, together with our local communities as a certified community club in the three cities of Ikeda, Kawanishi and Takarazuka, work towards a society in which everyone respects one another. This policy will be reviewed on a continuing basis as society requires.
